What Are Baby Onesies?

Super cute, fabulously comfy, warm, soft, great for layering and keeping nappies in place – it’s the baby onesie of course! Read on to enter the world of baby onesies. Your ultimate guide is here for you, straight from the Sky Rockets experts.

The term ‘onesie’ is used to describe a type of loose-fitting all-in-one jumpsuit. Over the years, the onesie has been called many things….baby grow…infant bodysuit…footie pyjamas...baby romper, to name a few!

Onesies are a popular item of clothing these days and not just for babies! Onesies are characterised by their comfortable, versatile design which has led to adults and children wearing onesies for all sorts of things. You’ll find an endless array of styles, patterns, fabrics and uses.

In this blog post we’ll explore the world of baby onesies and learn everything there is to know about this much-loved outfit.

First of all, where did the onesie come from? It might be a surprise to learn that the word ‘onesie’ is a brand name Gerber Childrenswear LLC used for an infant bodysuit they introduced back in 1982. The clothing was invented as a new way of keeping a baby’s tummy covered. The producers at Gerber would be shocked to learn how popular this new item of baby clothing has proved to be over the years.

We know how popular the onesie is, but what is so good about it?

Comfort

When your baby is wearing a onesie, pretty much all of their body will be covered evenly, so the skin is kept at the same temperature. The fabric is soft, natural and breathable and there won’t be any bumps, tags, gathers, decorations or anything else that may interfere with the comfort factor.

Convenience

If your baby is wearing their onesie, they can sleep, play, eat or go out and about. Onesies are super versatile and can easily be layered and paired with coats and cardigans.

Easy Clean

Most onesies are machine washable and suitable for tumble dryers – throw them in with a batch of washing, and they’ll be back on your baby in no time (always check the label).

Affordable

The simple, plain design keeps the cost low. But watch out for those designer onesies!

How to Put a Onesie on a Baby – A Step-By-Step Guide

There are probably many new parents out there wondering how on earth they get their newborn bundle safely inside this awkward piece of clothing. Well, it can be difficult at first, but as the saying goes – practice makes perfect! As you progress through parenthood, the onesie will no longer cause you to scratch your head. As with many other things – you’ll become a seasoned pro!
So, let’s get started. As always, you’re not alone - your helpful SkyRockets team won’t let you loose on the onesie without offering some helpful tips and advice gathered from our own experience.
First of all, let's look at the different types of onesies that are available.
Shortie onesie - without legs and snap studs at the bottom
Footed onesie - with long legs and snap studs down the front
Sleeping Bag Onesie - a combination of a onesie and a sleeping bag, designed for optimal movement and warmth[/caption]

Other types include zipper, footless, kimono, sleeveless, turtleneck, flutter sleeve, collared – there’s a onesie out there for everyone.

When preparing to dress your little one, try to find a safe, flat surface and get everything you need ready before you start.

Shortie Onesie

A shortie onesie has studs at the bottom, so this type will go over your baby’s head, or legs first.

  1. Lie your baby on their back
  2. Scrunch the onesie up to make a circle and put your baby’s head through all at once
  3. Pull down the material, inserting an arm at a time
  4. Pull right down and close the snap studs at the bottom

This process can be easily reversed if you want to try pulling it on feet first, from the bottom up.

Footed Onesie

  1. Open up the onesie and lie it flat on the changing surface,
  2. Place your baby onto the open onesie
  3. Gently ease your baby’s legs into the sleeves, one at a time
  4. Repeat for the arms
  5. Close the snapper

Sleeping Bag Onesies

Sleeping bag onesies combine traditional onesies and sleeping bags, designed to keep children warm and comfortable throughout the night. They provide full coverage, including enclosed arms and legs, ensuring your child stays cosy while allowing them to move freely. These onesies eliminate the need for blankets, preventing them from being kicked off, and are made from high-quality, breathable materials that are gentle on sensitive skin. Their design makes nappy changes easy and hassle-free, promoting restful sleep for babies and toddlers. View our range of sleeping onesies from ergoPouch.

When do Babies Stop Wearing Onesies?

Onesies are suitable from birth onwards. It really is that simple! Nowadays, onesies are available for newborn babies right through adulthood, so there really is no age limit to onesie-wearing!

However, there are times when the onesie might be a little unsuitable. When it comes to potty training, your baby’s onesie may fall out of favour and give way to more accessible items that are quick and easy to remove at short notice for those urgent toilet trips!

Important: Remember that wearing a onesie that’s too small can restrict the development of your baby's feet.
