What Do We Know About Baby Sun Protection? 

The NHS advises keeping babies under 6 months old out of the sun completely. But this can be difficult as we navigate our way through the week. Our baby will often accompany us on the school run or on weekly errands, but whatever the reason, our baby’s skin must be well protected.

People with darker skin can’t get sunburnt –  

All skin types can suffer sun damage. 

Babies need exposure to the sun to create Vitamin D –  

The NHS advises babies from birth to 1 year should have a daily supplement of vitamin D throughout the year if they  are breast fed or formula fed and having less that 500ml of formula per day. 

We can’t suffer sun damage on cloudy days –  

Harmful UV rays can pass through clouds and in fact, some can also pass through glass. If you’re worried at all about sun damage passing through glass, try using blackout blinds.  

Sunscreen is the best way to protect against sun damage – 

Sunscreen is important but the best way to protect against the sun’s UV rays is to keep your baby in the shade. Using a sunshade like ‘Trip’ or natural shade is the best way to avoid sun damage.

Are sunshades safe for babies? 

Sunshades are certainly safe to use for babies and are in fact much safer than using a blanket or muslin cloth to keep the sun off. The temperature can rise dangerously if you cover your baby’s pram or other carrier with a cloth as they don’t allow enough air flow. But always pay special attention to the manufacturer's instructions and precautions. 

Can babies catch the sun in the shade? 

Shade is the best way to protect your baby from the sun, especially during the hours of 11 am to 3 pm in the UK. But no shade is 100% safe as the UV rays are not completely blocked out. So it’s a good idea to use multiple layers of protection, especially on your baby’s delicate skin.
